What type of antifoul is used on my 1370 hull and Saildrive Leg?

Published on 04/14/2026

Your Seawind 1370 has been antifouled at the factory using the following system:

  • Two coats of brown/grey epoxy barrier coat:  Interprotect Epoxy Undercoat
  • One coat of ablative Blue antifouling bottom paint: Resene Altex No.5
  • Two coats of ablative Black antifouling bottom paint: Resene Altex No.5

The gelcoat was sanded to remove all traces of mould release wax and to provide a good key for the next coating. The antifoul is applied in two colours to indicate when each coat is wearing through.

As the skin fittings of the boat are typically plastic, the antifould can also be used over the through hull skin fittings however car should be taken to not antifoul over any earth plates.

The sail drive leg is antifouled with an aluminium antifoul, along with the square patch around the hull exit. This is because the copper component in the standard antifoul is not compatible with the aluminium of the sail drive leg. The sail drive unit also has the standard epoxy barrier/undercoat applied prior to antifoul application.

WARNING: If optional Shore Power, Lightning Protection or HF Radio is installed an external Earth Plate will be located underwater on the port hull. This Earth Plate must NOT be painted over

Coverage

The underwater surface area on a 1370 is approx. 63m²

18 Litres of Altex No5 will be sufficient coverage for two coats.

Altex Marine Paints are distributed by Resene Paints (Australia) Pty Ltd an affiliate of Pettit, USA.

The Sail dive leg and surrounding area should only require 1 litre of antifoul

Standard sail drive antifoul: International “Trilux”

1.2. Maintenance

The bottom paint on your Seawind 1370 is an ablative-type anti-fouling.  This means that the protective coat slowly dissolves as the boat sits in the water.  For this reason excessive scrubbing is not required and will only shorten the life span of your anti-foul.  Under normal conditions you can expect 9 to 12 months before new anti-foul needs to be applied.  When your boat is on the slipway you should use the opportunity to check the rudders, skin fittings and general condition of the underwater sections of the hulls.  When re-applying the anti-fouling follow the manufacturers instructions or if in doubt consult a professional shipwright or boat-builder.
