How does the grey water system work on the 1370?

Published on 04/14/2026

A general rule for recreational boats for many years has been to keep it simple when it comes to grey water. Grey water being the non-toilet liquid waste onboard from showers, sinks and washing machines.

For an easy low maintenance setup, a direct overboard gravity fed outlet is what you want. Anything more, and you then have maintenance. However, for low environmental impact, capturing all your waste can ber very desirable for certain ecological areas.

For many years in Australia, our commercially operated catamarans have had full grey water system so we have installed many over the the years.

In the standard Seawind 1370, we have gravity fed direct disharge sink and washing machine outlets and then a gulper pump for the shower drains. Each of the showers are on a relatively short run to the outlet with a loop in the line before that outlet. We have to introduce the electric gulper pump as the shower trays are below the waterline wheras the sinks are much higher and therefore do not need the pump.

An example of the port side head is below:

If optioning the grey water system, all water must be collected into the 2 x 150 Ltr (each) grey water tanks mounted below the cabin sole.between the fuel tanks and the main bulkhead, noting that these tanks are not standard on the 1370.

Sinks and washing machine are gravity fed into the tank and then the tank contents can either be sucked out from the deck fitting or drained up and overboard through an additional gulper pump discharge.

The below is the port side grey water system. The stbd is basically the same however also includes the galley sink waste and washing machine if optioned:

If optioned, the system cannot be bypassed. All piping has to run to the grey water tanks on either side of the boat. If you have every used pumps for showers and food waste drains, then you will understand that this option should only be taken if you need it for your intended area of sialing, and you are prepared to do additional maintenance for tank and pump cleaning.
