We want to cruise globally. Should we go 110v or 240v for a circumnavigation?

There are a few factors to consider here:

Firstly, it is only the US that run on 110v so for many this a litte more easy.

Ultimately we can setup your boat to be able to handle both voltages from the dock. The dedicated battery chargers we offer are dual voltage, meaning they can accept either 230v or 110v without issue. However, the shorepower option including a combination charger and inverter needs to be specified in either 110v or 230v.

Most boats that are truly a bluewater cruiser these days will have a large lithium battery bank and most of the boat will be run off this system. Setting up dual voltage charging systems if quite easy therefore as the primary need is to charge the battery bank, from which the boat is run. Yes, if you have shorepower connected using the combi charger / inverter, then the shorepower can power the AC circuits directly however any DC systems will still need to be powered through the battery bank. You therefore need to think about which region you will be located in the most amount of time.  Which voltage is your primary voltage for the boat?

IF your are US based and anticipate spending most of your time in the US, then go with 110v. You can run a number of items directly off your shorepower when in the US and then simply when offshore, use the dual voltage battery charger to top up your battery bank and run the boat from that.

If you anticipate sailing mostly in a 230V region, then clearly this is more desirable to go with 230v. Equally, if you are a US buyer and plan to sail in mostly 230v waters AND likely sell your boat in a 230v region, then this too should be considered from the start.
